The club is currently running three main classes - Rookies, Bronze Medallion and Higher Awards. Training for the higher awards (Award of Merit, Distinction and teaching awards) is combined with the other classes where appropriate.
All classes take place on Sundays, in term time only, from 6 pm until 8 pm. Check the dates on our Club Calendar.
'Rookies on the Beach' takes place on a Sunday in late July. This is an all day fun event, which teaches beach safety and basic open water skills in the cold North Sea. Other events may be planned - watch News for further information.
The classes are taught by RLSS UK qualified trainers. Click on the pictures below for further information:
Club Membership £10 per year, payable at the first meeting in September (or pro-rata for those joining mid-year). This fee covers the following costs:
Rookies £4 each class, payable on the night.
Bronze Medallion £85 per course (includes club membership, all tuition up to the first assessment, all course materials, certificate and medallion, as well as 12 to 15 weeks of classes).
Higher Awards £4 each class, payable on the night.
Rookies classes are aimed at children aged from 8 to 13 years old. Depending on numbers, the class may be split into two or more groups, allowing the teaching to be better tailored to the age/ability of the children.
The children are taught a wide range of skills, covering swimming and water safety, and outdoor and adventurous activities, as well as some areas of the National Curriculum including Citizenship, and Personal, Social and Health Education.
A natural progression from Rookies, this course is for young people of at least 12 or 13 years old and adults.
This is the main RLSS award and teaches life support, aquatic rescue and the theory behind both areas.
Adults and young people of at least 14 years old, who may already have been awarded the Bronze Medallion, can be trained for the following higher awards:
Award of Merit (from age 15)
Distinction (for holders of Award of Merit, from age 16)
Teaching Awards (from age 14)
National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches
Bronze Cross (open water award, from age 14)
Silver Cross (open water award, from age 15)
