At SELSC we believe that the Rookies are the foundation of our club. We were one of the first clubs in the area to embrace the Rookie program when it was launched by the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and have remained committed to both the core and optional programmes.
The Rookie programme addresses Swimming and Water Safety; Outdoor and Adventurous Activity; Citizenship, and Personal, Social and Health Education areas of the National Curriculum Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.
We aim to increase swimming ability, develop survival skills in the water, teach lifesaving and develop confidence, initiative, judgement, teamwork and leadership. To do this, the programme is split into four core areas:
And five optional areas:
These skills are learnt in the pool and in the classroom (or whatever room is available). Some of the classroom work on rescue aids is shown in the gallery.
The Rookies work within a structured programme of Star Grades which are awarded in levels 1 to 4, with Certificates and Badges to show their achievements.

Rookies on the Beach...or in the Forest!
As a club we have held an annual Camp, which has either been at Lowestoft (with beach and ocean based activities) or in the heart of the forest (for initiative and teamwork activities), which involves camping over a weekend and an awful lot of fun!
In 2006 we had a day trip to Felixstowe for Rookies on the Beach. See photos in Gallery.
In 2007 we had a weekend camping at Thorpe Woodlands in Thetford Forest. See photos in Gallery.
We offer Rookies every Sunday night (school term time) from 6 to 8pm. Membership is £10 per year (September-July) and the nightly fee is just £4 for 2 hours!
